Another reason open-source is great

I switched again from Camino back to Firefox yesterday because I was getting annoyed by one little thing that Camino doesn’t do…right click on an image and you don’t get the “properties” option…so you can’t quickly see the pixel size of an image. I use that feature quite a bit when constructing web pages (and things like this blog).

Realized after a few hours of work with Firefox, that I was missing that Camino speed—and speed counts a lot with me. Well, this morning when I came in to work, I thought I’d write a quick email to the Camino feedback address..thinking maybe they’d see my note one of these days and perhaps add in the “properties” right click feature. Hit send and went back to checking on a few of our servers…

About five minutes later, I got a reply. Not some anonymous, auto-reply thing but a note from Mike Pinkerton…the Project Leader of the Camino team.

“We kick around the idea of “page info” or some panel for web designers, but it’s not that high on our list. It really is a fairly niche feature and we’re trying to keep Camino light on its feet. That said, maybe one day down the road.

Thanks for the feedback and support!”

Pretty cool…

Yeah, I switched back to Camino. I can always use something else to figure out image sizes, right?

CAMINO

Update:

About an hour later, I got yet another reply from Simon Fraser (worked on the Camino team and came up with the browser’s name):

Don’t forget that you can get the pixel size just by viewing the image (“View Image” menu item). The pixel size shows up in the title bar.

So, it all works out, doesn’t it? I mean, thanks to the power of the internet (and the community model of open source development), I can issue an interrupt to two programming geniuses and get them to waste a few cycles on my little problem.
